[How To] Install Windows 7 in your PC

It's been a long time since Microsoft has released Windows 7. Microsoft claims that Windows 7 is the most secure Operating System they've ever created. So this post going to teach you how to install Windows 7 in your PC. I would recommend all Windows XP and Vista users to switch to Windows 7. Windows 7 is really Secure when compared to any other previous version of Windows. Before I continue, I would like to warn you that Windows 7 has some special System Requirements. They are
  • 1 GHz or faster 32-bit or 64-bit Processor
  • Minimum of 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit and 2 GB RAM for 64-bit Processor
  • 16 GB of Hard-disk space for 32-bit and 20 GB for 64-bit
  • DirectX 9 Graphics Card with WDDM 1.0 or higher
If your PC meets the following requirements then you can continue with the Installation procedure. You even need to have the Windows 7 Ultimate Installation DVD. If you don't have Windows 7 Ultimate Installation DVD then you can download one from the links below and burn it to a DVD.

Download links for Windows 7 Ultimate Installation DVD:
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 32-bit English (2.4 GB)
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit English (3.1 GB)

Step 1:
Power ON your PC and switch ON your CPU. Now insert Windows 7 Installation DVD in your PC's CD/DVD drive. Restart your PC and after the BIOS screen you should see a message

Press any key to boot from CD/DVD...

At this time you should Press a key on your Keyboard to start the Windows Setup.

Note : If you don't see the above message after your PC restarts then, you should see if the First Boot Device in Boot Device Priority is set to CD/DVD Drive.

Step 2:
Windows Setup will start loading the installation files. This will take some time.

Step 3:
By now Windows should have finished loading the files. In the next screen you're going to choose some Installation Options like Language to Install, Time Format, Currency Format etc. Select appropriate option and click Next.

Step 4:
We're going to Install Windows. Right? Then in the next screen you'll have to click Install Now.

Step 5:
In the next screen, Windows Setup will start and show License terms. Just click "I accept the license terms" and clickNext.

Step 6:
In the next screen, we're going to choose the Type of Installation. If you've already installed Windows XP or Vista and are going to upgrade to Windows 7 then choose Upgrade. Since I'm going to install Windows 7 on a brand new PC, I'll be going to do a Fresh Install so, I'll be selecting Custom (advanced) option.

Step 7:
Now's the time to Create Partition on our Hard-drive. Click "Drive options (advanced)". Drives options will appear. Click "New". Then type the size of the Partition in Mega Bytes. Remember that 1024 MB = 1 GB. I'm going to create a Single Partition (Drive) of 127 GB. I've entered 130046 in the Size field. Now click Apply.

Step 8:
Since this is our first partition that we're creating, we'll receive a message stating that "To ensure that all Windows features work correctly, Windows might create additional partitions for system files". This states that for proper functioning of Windows features, Windows will create another partition named "System Reserved" that will store important files that are required for proper functioning of Windows. Just click OK and wait for 2 - 3 seconds, our partition will be created then. In my case, Windows has automatically created a new 100 MB partition named System Reserved for storage of important files that are required for proper functioning of Windows features.

Step 9:
Now we've created the required no.of partitions. In the image below you'll see that there are 2 partitions. First is System Reserved, that stores important files for proper functioning of Windows features, Second is the Partition where we'll be installing Windows 7. Select the second partition and click Next to start the Installation of Windows 7.

Note : If you want to create more partitions, you can click Unallocated space and come again from Step 7.

Step 10:
Setup will now Copy Windows Files, Expand them, Install Features, Install Updates etc. This process will take some time. In the meanwhile, you can have a cup of coffee. After this step has successfully completed, Setup will automatically restart your PC in 10 Seconds. You can restart manually by clicking Restart now to save a bunch of seconds.

Step 11:
Now when your PC Restarts you'll again receive a message

Press any key to boot from CD/DVD...

This time Don't press any key because we don't want to start over with the Installation Process. And also Don't remove Windows 7 Installation DVD because Setup won't continue without the Windows 7 Installation DVD in CD/DVD Drive. Setup will update registry settings and start services and continue with Completing Installation. Setup will once again restart your PC and continue after restart.

Step 12:

Now when your PC Restarts you'll again receive a message

Press any key to boot from CD/DVD...

This time also Don't press any key because we don't want to start over with the Installation Process. And also Don't remove Windows 7 Installation DVD because Setup won't continue without that.

Now we'll be setting up Windows. Setup will prepare our Computer for first use and first it will ask us for Username and a Computer Name. Just write the Username, Setup will automatically suggest the Computer Name. You can also change the suggested username if you don't like. Click Next when you're done.

Step 13:
In the next screen, we Set a Password for our user account. It is optional but I recommend you to add a Password to your Username for avoiding unauthorized access to your User account. Click Next when you're done.

Step 14:
Now the Setup asks for the Product key. If you've purchased Windows 7 then Enter the Product Key that is printed on the back of Windows 7 Package. If you don't have Product Key then don't worry! You can simply click Next.

Step 15:
Now comes the Windows Update Setting selection. It depends on your Internet Connection and Genuineness. I've selected Use recommended settings.

Step 16:
Now the final thing is to configure Date and Time Settings. Change the time zone, date and time according to your Country and click Next.

There's no Step 17. Finally you've Installed Windows 7 in your PC. You can now customize it according to your needs, install the software that you use regularly etc. If you had any problem while Installing then please let me know via comments.
